Marine and Soil Microbial Ecology

Boris Wawrik, Ph.D.

Research Interests

My research interests can broadly be defined within the areas of microbial ecology, environmental microbial genomics, and bioremediation. In these areas, I have taken advantage of rapidly improving technology in order to answer important ecological questions regarding community composition, diversity and ecosystem function. I aim to develop and apply molecular biology methods in order to the study microbial processes in the environment. Much of my work thus far has focused on the regulation of genes involved in carbon fixation and nitrogen metabolism in marine algae and the development of methodologies that improve natural products discovery from bacterial populations in the environment. Currently, my focus is to enhance the quantitative and predictive power of molecular methods used in the study of microbial populations in the environment. In addition, my lab is also involved in the elucidation of the genetics of anaerobic hydrocarbon metabolism.

This website contains an overview of some of my past and current research. Please feel free to contact me, if you have any questions or would like more information.
